Dimensions

Pendant height: 1.50 Inches; Pendant width: 0.34 Inches

This pendant combines two gems: a dyed black ethiopian opal and a natural Brazilian spessartine garnet. The opal weighs in at 0.6 carats and measures 5.8 mm in diameter. The spessartine measures 0.72 x 0.28 inches (18.5 x 7.1 mm) and weighs in at 2.4 carats.

Ethiopian Welo opal has made a huge mark on the gem trade since it was brought to market in 2008. Famed for its great durability and amazing fire, these stones come in a wide range of colors from colorless and transparent through whites, greys, browns and through to true black. Some stones, however, have excellent fire, but are masked by a near-opaque white base. These stones can be dramatically improved by artificial coloration, either by smoke treatment or the introduction of dye. I rather like this treatment when it is properly disclosed; it results in very beautiful stones which look different from the natural variety and are very affordable. This stone is a good example of why this treatment is nice: the black backdrop puts bright, full-spectrum rainbow fire in stark relief. It is also a round faceted stone, which is hard to find.

Spessartine is one of the 5 main gem varieties of garnet. It is most famous for its orange variety, which is often known as mandarin garnet--it does also come in red, however. One particular find of these garnets from Brazil show an unusual feature: extensive surface etching. This has resulted in unusual, very un-garnet-like elongated shapes as well as complex surface features. I'd heard about these for years, and finally found a few at non-astronomical prices from a Brazilian dealer at this year's Tucson gem show. It provides a nice match for the black opal above, with its dark tones occasionally yielding a red flash.
