Description

"The Nature of Idolatry: A part of the Dreamaker Series" by Elli McNall

***Won a Juror's Citation Award at the National Juried Exhibition of 2016 held by the Arts and Culture Alliance of Knoxville, TN***

In the Dreamaker series, I created paper based wall hangings to aid in focus and meditation. With special attention to inventive ways of transforming and combining materials, I strive to transport the viewer back to their own center. Being raised Catholic, I remember learning about Idolatry in Sunday School and laughing about how it sounded like "Dollar Tree." With a recent move to the Appalachian Mountains, I have found more to celebrate in nature's laws and accomplishments than in the church's. I find solace in the structure of flowers and determination in each vine as they grow new leaves.

In "The Nature of Idolatry," I am exploring the processes of life, death, and rebirth, while specifically looking at the way matter rearranges itself. I use paper as a vehicle. Viewable from both sides, this wall hanging features a large floral Elli pod (scraps of paper and small tokens sewn together) drawn with crayons and iridescent paint. Hanging from the scalloped edges are a series of springy tassels formed from folded and decorated paper strips. At the ends of the tassels are smaller Elli pods and cotton teardrop pods. Dreamaker wall hangings are the perfect addition to any forward thinking home in need of more zen!
