Y'all, these crayon rolls have saved my sanity. I throw them in my bag or leave them in the car and wherever the kids go, they go--restaurants, meetings, to class with me, anywhere. Having a pocket for each individual crayon encourages neatness and hand-eye coordination, and makes their art experience more satisfactory. And also?

It's pretty.

These crayon rolls are a little more sophisticated than your typical art roll--I utilize upholstery remnant fabric for the outside of the roll, and a soothing neutral sherbet green for the inside. The green-and-gold upholstery fabric is richly colored, beautifully patterned, and feels great, so kids still love it, but the fact that it's not your usual kiddie fabric keeps it satisfying to adult eyes, as well, and lets it work in adult spaces. Keep a few in a nice dish on your coffeetable for young guests to play with while the adults chat, or hand them out at wedding receptions or other nice parties and entertain children without clashing with your decor.

An additional bonus is the fact that the sturdiness of this upholstery fabric, its beauty, and its rich texture gives it all the best qualities of another popular children's fabric, wool felt, but without the worries of wool.

These two crayon rolls are made out of complementary upholstery fabric, so that they're not identical but work well together. One is a large-size roll, and includes eight Crayola crayons, and the other is a smaller, travel-size roll, including six Crayola crayons. Keep one in the car and slip one in your purse, give one to your child and the other to her friend--they're both highly versatile and support a child's creative play and artistic development.

My upholstery remnants come from sample books that I thrifted from a non-profit thrift store. Giving old, unwanted materials a new, happy life as part of a beautiful, useful handmade product is the main component of the recycling ethic that informs my work.
