Description

Beautiful jewelry has always been a part of life for the Cherokee people. Copper was traded from the Great Lakes regions beginning about 3000 years ago and fashioned into earrings, necklaces, and ceremonial objects. Ornate adornments of clay, copper, gold, mica, carved stone, incised pink mussel shell, rock crystal & freshwater pearls have been worn into modern times by Cherokee men and women. This jewelry calls on the spirit of the ancient Cherokee artisans. Each design is a one of a kind. Modern forms and ancient elements such as fire and pottery techniques are used to incise small lines and designs to create uniquely Cherokee jewelry.

This necklace is a statement piece. Seven triangular pieces of polished mussel shell, each representing a point of the seven-pointed star that represents the seven clans of the Cherokee Nation, are joined to create a one-of-a-kind work of art. The necklace is reversible. One side is black, revealing the tortoise-shell like texture of the outer mussel shell, complimented by copper disks. The other side is white with the iridescent nacre of the mussel shell and mussel shell dangles. The necklace measures 22 inches and closes with a lobster claw clasp. It can be shortened if needed simply by attaching the clasp in a different link in the chain.
