Description

*This is the custom-made version of this dress. For one made in standard sizes, please see the Ready to Wear listing:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/450318190/ready-to-wear-helena-gown-vintage

A beautiful luxurious full sequin gown, with long sleeves, plunging front and back, and detailed draping throughout. Inspired by the glamorous fit of Old Hollywood evening gowns with the sparkle of the 1970s Studio 54 era sirens.

The gown is fully lined so it is soft and comfortable on the inside. The closure is a concealed back zipper and clasp.

This dress will be made without built in bust support unless otherwise specified. The option of built in boning and/or bust cups is available, but we generally advise against them unless absolutely necessary. Generally you will be able to get better results with other support types, such as low back/front bras, or stick on bras, and you will at least be able to try these first and omit them if they don't work. If you do decide to go for bust cups, be aware that it is not possible to get as wide a range of sizes as with bras, so if you have a large bust cup size in bras, the built in bust cups we would use may be smaller. You can however specify if you would like thick cups (padded) or thin cups for light shaping and support. The boning is a strip of wire that runs vertically along the bust along the midline and sides. We shape it to the curve of the bust at the level you have specified for bust height. This is quite sturdy for shaping, but some may find it too stiff. Generally it is not comfortable to wear your own bra inside a dress/top that has boning built in, so one or the other is best.

This gown can be made in any color sequin fabric:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/237080946/sequin-fabric-samples-choose-the-colors?ref=shop_home_active_22
Please read through all measurements and make sure you understand them before starting.

Bust
If you plan to wear a bra with your dress, please wear this bra when taking your measurement. If you will be going without a bra, or opting for built in boning and bust cups, then please wear an unpadded lightly supportive bra only when taking your measurements. You will wrap the tape around your bust and around your back at the level of the widest part of your bust. This is usually around nipple level. If the top is exposed or open, you will want to make the bust measurement a little smaller, to ensure you're held in place correctly, and the top is not gaping.

Waist
For most dresses and tops, this will be your natural waist (the narrowest point of your midriff). However, if you want a more empire waist style, you can specify exactly where you want the waistline of your dress to sit. For skirts, the 'waist' measurement will be top of the skirt, so this can be high, mid or low. Please remember that all other measurements that reference 'waist' will refer to this point- either the natural waist or whatever you have chosen. Simply wrap the tape around your body at this point- the natural waist or the waist level of your choosing. If you want a fitted style, make this a tight measurement, but ensure you can still move and breathe, or you may not be able to close your zipper!

Hips
This is not necessarily your hip bones, but the widest part of your lower body. This may be your lower abdomen, your hips, your butt or your thighs. Simply wrap the tape around the widest part of your lower body.

Butt
If you're going for a more fitted style, and your butt sticks out more, we would like to accommodate this! Please give us the measurement for your butt, from the side seam of your pants, around the back, on the widest part of your butt, and to the side seam on the other side. Then include the measurement around the front, continuing the line from the side seam to the other side seam. This more comprehensive measurement allows us to build in space for a booty without adding space all around (which would make the front baggy).

Thighs
If you're aiming for a fitted style that will be tight through the thighs, please give us the measurement for the thighs, right before the skirt will start to loosen and flare. We recommend keeping this high enough that you can still walk, but ultimately, it's up to you! Simply wrap the tape around the thighs at the level you have chosen.

Shoulder
Take this from the back. From the upper outer tip of one shoulder, run the tape across the top of the back in a straight line, to the upper outer tip of the other shoulder. This measurement should not take in any of the arm.

Shoulder to bust
From the level of the shoulder in the front, at about the mid clavicular line (directly above the nipple) run the tape straight down the bust to the level at which you took your bust measurement.

Shoulder to waist
From the level of the shoulder in the front, at about the mid clavicular line (directly above the nipple) run the tape straight down over the bust to the level at which you took your waist measurement. This should take in the full scope of the bust, to ensure we are allowing space in the area.

Waist to hips
From the level at which you took your waist measurement, in a straight line down your front, to the level at which you took your hip measurement.

Waist to thigh:
If you have given us a thigh measurement (for a fitted gown only), please measure from the waist level straight down the front to the level at which you took your thigh measurement.

Length: We would appreciate two length measurements – one taken from the shoulder line, down the front, over your curves, and one taken from the waist level. Do not pull the tape tight. It should hang/flow freely.

Armscye: the 'arm hole' - wrap the measuring tape around your shoulder and underarm, allowing room for comfortable range of motion. You can also take this measurement off a comfortable top you have. Remember that if it is too tight, it may pinch you or be uncomfortable, while too wide could mean gaping, or showing undergarments.

Bicep: wrap the tape around the widest part of your upper arm.

Sleeve length: from the tip of the shoulder with a relaxed arm, measure down to where the sleeve will end.

Sleeve opening: Measure the circumference of the sleeve opening, whether at the wrist or elsewhere on your arm, allowing enough space for your hand to go through, and a comfortable range of motion.

Front neckline depth: From the centre of your shoulder line, in line with the height of your shoulders (for some this will be the notch between the collar bones; for others this will be on their neck), measure a straight line down your chest to where you want the neckline to plunge to.

Back v depth: From the base of the neck (at shoulder line), measure a straight line down to where the back v should end.

Train: If you want a train, specify the additional length required. Eg. A 12” train will extend 12” further than the length of the dress. (Note: a train longer than 5" will incur an extra charge. Please ask us for a quote if you intend to have a long train. )

Accurate measurements are the key to proper fit. Please contact us with any questions.

Thank you!

FAQs

‘Custom-made’ pieces are made from scratch to your exact specifications and measurements, and every detail is customisable. They are priced higher than RTW and take longer to make, because of the highly unique nature of each custom piece.
‘Ready-to-Wear’ pieces are made according to standard pattern blocs we have already made. They are in standard dress sizes and the design/dimensions can’t be changed. Ready-to-Wear pieces are more affordable and much quicker to make (approximately 4 weeks).
'Sample Sale' pieces have already been made, for photoshoots or sizing purposes. They have never been worn, and they can ship immediately. However, they are not customisable.
For Ready-to-Wear, please consult the size chart in the listing for that particular dress. Don’t assume that this will be the same as your usual dress size. If between sizes, choose the size that fits the largest of your measurements.

For Custom-made, we need to get accurate measurements from you. Please follow our specific, detailed instructions and send us photos of each measurement as you take them. We have videos and stills available to help, and we can answer any clarification questions you may have. It is imperative to send correct measurements to us. We cannot be held responsible if the measurements you submitted were not correct.

For Sample Sale pieces, please refer to the specific measurements in the listing.
Try to be as close as possible to what will be under your dress. This means no bulky clothing obviously, but also, consider your undergarments. If you will be wearing a bra with your dress, wear that exact bra when taking your measurements. Likewise with Spanx or a bodysuit. If you will not be wearing a bra or other undergarments with the dress, then try to simplify your undergarments for the measurement session. If you are wearing a padded push-up bra taking your measurements, but you are not going to wear that under your dress, then your 'bust' measurement and your 'shoulder to bust' will be inaccurate, leading to poor fit of the dress in this area. Try to be as close as possible to your body state under the dress.
It's important to realise that you may need a final fitting/minor alterations after you receive the dress. It's normal to have multiple fittings on bridal/custom gowns but as we cannot make the final tweaks on your body, these will have to be done by your local tailor. This is reflected in the price. We have many resources to get measurements as accurate as possible - videos, stills, etc. If you waive these options,
or still submit inaccurate measurements, we can advise you on your options, but we bear no blame.
If we have made a significant error in making the piece to your submitted measurements, we will of course fix it. Please send us photos of the dress measurements that deviate from those submitted (by 1" or more).
It's important to understand that there are no refunds on custom pieces, so you have to be sure you like the style, color, fabric, etc beforehand. We offer every opportunity to see fabric swatches in person, so please avail of our swatch ordering service. Also, try to try on similar gowns in person before placing your custom order. We are all different shapes and sizes, so just because something looks great on a model or pinterest picture, doesn't mean we'll like it on ourselves. It's important to figure all of this out before placing a custom order. We cannot refund your order simply because you end up not liking the dress on you, after we have custom made it.
There are no returns or refunds on custom-made pieces.

If a Ready-to-Wear item you purchased doesn’t fit, you can exchange it for another size. You will need to pay for the return shipping of the first and new shipping of the second item, and may be subject to a fresh 3 week production time if we don’t have the style/size/color combination you want in stock. Please check the measurement chart carefully before purchase.

If you simply don’t want to keep the RTW item, you can return it for a refund, minus a 15% restocking fee. This covers the costs and labor involved in packaging, posting, and processing returns. The shipping fee is non-refundable.

Sample Sale items are non-refundable.
No. We strongly advise bridal parties or groups to place one single bundled order to get things moving and because we need to work on them all together for uniformity.
If you need to stagger the orders for your party, and have everyone ordering separately, then we cannot give the same discounts for these, as we would not be working on them together, and it's more time and work for us to deal with each individual. We also cannot guarantee total uniformity in such cases because of different fabric batches, and change of available materials over time, etc. Our recommendation for groups/bridal parties is to order all together. We can still arrange to ship to different addresses, but the group should be kept in one order.
There are a few ways to go...

If you're getting a custom-made dress, we obviously need to get your measurements in advance, which can be hard to guess at if your body is changing. We advise adding on extra space to your bust, empire waist and bump, and a little extra length. Then, you will have alterations done locally right before the event for the perfect fit.

You could also wait until closer to the day and order a Ready to Wear dress which takes less time to make, and you will have a better idea of your size.

You could also have an adjustable style dress custom-made. Consider stretch fabrics, elasticated waists, and multiway styles.

Unfortunately, there is no universal size chart that tells us how your body may change!
There are a few very useful things to do:

1. Try on dresses of a similar style to ensure you're happy with the style prior to ordering.

2. Get fabric swatches, to be certain of the color and type, in person.

3. Get accurate measurements/sizing. We have many resources available to help with this - just ask. It's a crucial step.

4. Ask questions about anything you're unsure of or don't understand. Some fashion and dressmaking terms are confusing, and if you're not sure what something means, we're happy to explain. Don't assume we will make your piece a certain way if we haven't discussed it. Ask about the lining, if the fabric stretches, the way certain parts fit and move, and even the limitations of a particular style or fabric
