Steel pin and native cherry hardwood hand looms. Hand-crafted in Indiana by Alan Hokenson of Blue Butterfly Originals. Each loom includes a 5" weaving needle and instructions.

Miniature weaving looms and small hand-looms, so popular from the 1930’s into the early 1970’s, are happily making a come-back in the craft world. Versatile and portable, projects can range in size and complexity from a single woven square for a mug rug, to several hundred connected squares for a bed-spread.

What makes these looms so unique is the special method with which you can warp them. The majority of the yarn is laid out on the loom in three “warp” steps. The Blue Butterfly Originals Pin Looms have been updated from the vintage versions with increased pin spacing, which makes it possible to weave with a wider range of yarn sizes. Marks and numbers help keep weaving fun and methodical. The sett of weaving on these looms is about 4 ends per inch, so they are perfect for heavy worsted to bulky yarns. Finer yarns will result in a more open weave structure. This does mean that if you are trying to match to an older style loom, such as a weavette, the sett will not be compatible.

The woven squares and rectangles are building blocks that can be combined into a variety of patterns for a variety of projects: afghans, pillows, scarves, and table-runners, to name a few.

Yarns of various fiber content can be used to weave the squares. However, using wool yarn allows fiber artists to combine two interests in the world of wool: weaving and felting. Woven squares can be hand or machine fulled (felted), even further expanding the creative possibilities!

This is a sturdy and very easy to use loom. The weaving goes super fast! I can do an 8x8 cotton square in 45 minutes. I especially recommend the instructions linked in the item details section. The yarn recommended for this is bulky weight, otherwise it will be rather loose, open weave. I ordered a bulky weight cotton elsewhere (750 YPP) which ended up pretty open. I was disappointed until I washed it. The fibers puffed up and the square shrunk a bit. It now looks more like "fabric". From takeup (shrinkage when coming off the tension from the loom) and finishing (hot water wash, warm dryer until damp, hot iron), my square went from 8" x 8" on the loom to about 6.5 inches square. Just something to think about when considering the size of your finished piece/pieces. I look forward to buying more of these in different sizes.

The loom is well made and arrived packaged nicely. The instructions that came with it worked well and I have made several little projects while practicing for my larger idea.

I really like this 6 in pin loom. The number of pins is the same as a 4 inch so there is no need to alter the patterns. I've found yarn of weight 5 works very very well. Oh yeah, shipping and packagaing and all that stuff top notch.
