This wall sculpture is an abstract vision of a single celled organism called a Radiolarian. Radiolarians are ancient free swimming organisms that occur in all the oceans throughout the world.
I found their shapes to be fascinating and therefore inspired this beautiful wall hanging and will surely inspire more to come.
This piece was made using traditional and modern wood working tools. The wooden ellipses stand proud of the black Ultrasuede background giving the piece a 3-D quality that looks great from all angles. I call this unique technique 'onlays'.
The frame is made from 12 segments of Wenge wood and the joints are reinforced on the back with custom splines. This makes the frame extremely durable and will last generations. The piece has a cleat hanging system that holds it flat and secure against the wall.

Dimensions: 25" diameter by 1" deep.

Materials: Flaky Caroba wood, Black Ultrasuede, Baltic Birch plywood, Wenge (frame), Cocobolo center piece, Abalone inlays

The finish I use is a CAB acrylic lacquer from Sherwin Williams with the vinyl sealer base coat. I often use paste wax with steel wool to make the piece feel better to the touch and to bring out the sheen.
Very little care if any is necessary aside from removing dust occasionally. You can use an air canister if you like. You may also use any wax type polish to bring out the sheen. If alcohol or a chemical gets on the piece, wipe off immediately. Letting a chemical sit will ruin the finish.
The leather lining I use is a synthetic suede called Ultrasuede. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Custom orders are accepted based on wood type only, unless a large quantity is desired. My boxes are all made in batches and are not conducive to size changes. I can do monograms as seen in this listing:
