Description

dentalium choker and earring set with amethyst. Dentalium is a perfect choice for a choker because the curve of the shell fits the curve of the neck so gracefully and comfortably and because all the leather, even the spacers is hand cut from soft deer skin this is a very comfortable choker to wear.

A mix of modern and traditional with this one, I didn't plan on adding the amethyst but when I combined the old French lavender white heart trade beads with the white leather and white dentilium something urged me to add the amethyst faceted points as well and I love the way this turned out. I'm pretty sure no one else will have a choker and earring set like this. The metal beads are solid brass which compliments the white and purple perfectly. I chose a nice banded amethyst piece for the center choker focal and more clear solid purple ones for the earrings. The dentalium on the earrings are the longest two I had, they meaure 2" just for the shell! Overall from the top on the ear wire to the bottom of the amethyst point they are 3 1/2" long.
The choker will fit neck sizes 12.5" and up. The height of the choker is 1.5" and the leather ties are 10" long.

If you prefer to buy only the choker or only the earrings and not the complete set please convo me for a price and I can make you a custom one.

A little dentalium history:
Dentalium was one of the first materials used by native people. The shells, which were harvested on the East Coast, were traded among many tribes and as far away as California. The shell's length and quality determined value. Highest quality shells would be about 2.25" long, and a dozen would typically be strung together.
Certain men, who became known as "Indian bankers," tattooed marks on their arms with which to measure the length of the shells.
Both men and women of many American Indian tribes wore dentalium earrings. Dentalium was worn both as a personal adornment and as symbol of wealth. It would be worn as part of dress regalia in ceremonial and spiritual rites and for dance. Dentalium is still seen occasionally as part of a person’s regalia at Pow Wows.
