Description

Carina is a constellation of the southern sky, but it’s also the name of a collection of jazz stars, brought to you by the artist Pollux. Walking off my dinner alongside the edge of a bluff that offers a magnificent view of the city and of the night sky, I spotted a bright light just above me. Was it a late night missile test? A Qantas Boeing 747-400 from Sydney? I activated my stargazing app and pointed my phone towards the bright light. It was identified as the star Canopus.

On my return home, I read more about that star. A supergiant, Canopus is the second brightest star in the night sky (the brightest is Sirius). And it was part of the constellation Carina. “Carina” means “keel” in Latin –as in the keel of a ship. Carina was once part of the larger southern constellation of Argo Navis, which represented Argo, the famous ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece. However, in the 18th century, the Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille split the larger ship into smaller components. Therefore, near the constellation of Carina the Keel, we find the constellations of Vela the Sail and Puppis the Poop Deck.

As my brain tends to do, I thought of jazz and how “Carina” would make a great name for a band of players. What if each member was named after one of the stars that form Carina? Isn’t a jazz band its own constellation of stars shining brightly on the stage and in recordings? I believe so. This collection of drawings is the result of that late-night walk.
