Description

The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a magical wind and water eroded landscape worth many visits each year.

• Printed on 11"x17" 300 lb Moab Archival Luster photo paper with Archival Photographic Inks. The final color image is 8.5" x 12.75", h-w ($1400.00 with Continental US free shipping).

Kasha-Katuwe means "white cliffs" in the Pueblo language Keresan. Keres is the a traditional language people of the pueblo tribes of northern New Mexico. The Pueblo de Cochiti tribe has always considered this area a spiritual environment, and continues to have each year many days of (private) ceremonies. The red-barked Manzanita shrub grows throughout the canyon, and was used for medicinal purposes. As I walk the grounds the earthen forms do speak in gentle and expanding tones.

The many teepee-like formations of Tent Rocks are located 40 miles southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico (near Cochiti Pueblo), and is a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) managed site that was established as a U.S. National Monument in January 2001. The National Monument, on the on the east side of Peralta Canyon on the Pajarito Plateau in north-central New Mexico, ranges from 5,570 feet to 6,760 feet in altitude.

The cone-shaped tent rock formations are the products of volcanic eruptions that occurred 6 to 7 million years ago and left pumice, ash, and tuff deposits over 1,000 feet thick. Tremendous explosions from the Jemez volcanic field spewed pyroclasts (rock fragments), while searing hot gases blasted down slopes in an incandescent avalanche called a “pyroclastic flow.”
Precariously perched on many of the tapering hoodoos are boulder caps that protect the softer pumice and tuff, cone-shaped sandstone forms below. Some tents have lost their hard, resistant cap-rocks, and are disintegrating. While fairly uniform in shape, the tent rock formations vary in height from a few feet up to 90 feet.

By my collectors, and artistic admirers, I am known for acutely sharp detail, penetrating depth of space, and for finding the uniqueness within such landscapes forms, which will exceed your dreams or imagination as the photographic works reach with sophistication into the unexpected.
