There is always a story behind the work an artist/artisan produces. The one behind this bowl weighed about 80 lbs., had hopeful brown eyes and grumbled like a bear. He was my loyal studio assistant – Joe. The animal shelter where he lived for the 10 months before we met had named him. The shelter had rescued him from a back yard where he had been abandoned chained to a dog house. They estimated his age at about 5 years. Being a large, black dog with multiple health and psychological issues it had been very hard for the shelter to find him a home.

Joe came home with me on Halloween of 2009. He was scared of everything and everyone. It took months to clear up his health issues and even longer for him to learn to trust anyone but me. A year and a half ago Joe was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his paw. Surgery provided a temporary respite, but months later the tumor came back and was growing aggressively. Drug therapy made him extremely ill. Our last option was surgery to remove his leg. He was doing well after the surgery and learned to get around quite well on three legs. The beginning of November he showed signs of not feeling well again. The cancer had spread despite all our efforts and we had to say goodbye to our sweet, brave boy.

Because Joe spent so much of his time supervising production in our studio, we thought it would be appropriate to produce a special dog bowl – the Joe Bowl – to help pay his medical bills. A portion of the proceeds from every Joe Bowl we sell will go to the animal shelter that rescued Joe to help them take care of other dogs with health issues.

The Joe Bowl is completely hand and paw made. It measures 7 1/2” in diameter and is about 2 1/4” tall. It will hold three cups of kibble or water. Each bowl is hand cast in a plaster mold. Once it has firmed up, we turn it out of the mold and hand trim the rim. When the clay is leather hard I hand carve the lettering in the rim – “A DOG WAGS ITS TAIL WITH ITS HEART.” It's a saying that truly applied to Joe. Each bowl is signed with Joe's paw print stamp inside. The bottom of the bowl has an FRC/Joe Bowl stamp.

The bowl is glazed inside and out and can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. All the glazes I use are food safe and lead free. This listing is for a bowl glazed in a beautiful French Blue translucent glaze.
