What you have here is a woodworker's mallet made from a piece of reclaimed wood. I believe it to be some kind of oak, it is very hard and heavy. After revealing the true grain of the board and discovering how hard and heavy it is I thought this would be perfect to make a mallet from. I turned both the head and handle on the lathe, constantly checking the handle until I could grip it firmly yet comfortably. I left the head of the mallet as big as possible so it is naturally heavy and one solid piece, making it perfect for delivering hit after hit to settle any stubborn joinery.
This mallet weighs 1lb 7oz.
Approx: 11" in length from bottom of handle to top of mallet
6" wide mallet head
2.5" at thickest point
I finished the mallet with a good coat of Boiled Linseed Oil then finished it off with my shop made beeswax/B.L.O. polish to protect and show off the beautiful grain of the wood.
