Description

DNAprints are an inspired new way to showcase the beauty of the natural world with a detailed mosaic that’s built with real DNA. Using more than 30,000 individually colored and arranged base pairs of authentic DNA sequence from the African clawed frog, scientific model organism (Xenopus laevis), I’ve created a unique image of one of the most well-studied organisms on the planet.

I call these images DNAprints because DNA forms the "blue print" or "finger print" of an organism. These mosaics are carefully constructed from the tiniest biological fingerprint of organisms for a unique look that holds a powerful message. We see beauty at the surface but I am inspired to show the true story underneath and the complexity of an underlying architecture of life. My art showcases their beauty in a new, inspired way with a beautifully complex mosaic built with real DNA.

The African clawed frog (X. laevis) is what scientists call a model organism - meaning it has been the subject of many scientific studies and has taught us a lot of what we know about science. They are special because their eggs are very large, allowing researchers to observe and manipulate fertilization and reproduction. Other types of model organisms include lab mice, fruit flies (Drosophila), a plant called Arabidopsis thaliana, yeast, zebrafish, and the roundworm C. elegans. This graphic is a new way of visualizing the underlying architecture of life. A must-have for science-lovers and nature enthusiasts!

As part of creating this image, I modified a photograph by Brian Gratwicke (Flickr) under creative commons license CC_BY.
