The Hierophant, a hand embossed tarot card repoussé metal framed artwork, created from sheet pewter.

The first in what will hopefully be a series of tarot-inspired pieces, based on the beautiful Rider Waite deck from 1910. This piece features the Hierophant, the 5th card of the Major Arcana.

From the Wikipedia page: “In many modern packs, the Hierophant is represented with his right hand raised in what is known esoterically as the blessing or benediction, with two fingers pointing skyward and two pointing down, thus forming a bridge between Heaven and Earth reminiscent of that formed by the body of The Hanged Man. The Hierophant is thus a true “pontiff”, in that he is the builder of the bridge between deity and humanity. In his left hand he held a triple cross. The Hierophant was also known as "The Teacher of Wisdom."
The figure and keys are embossed, tiny gems are set in his crown, and I have added the lettering and background detail with patina solution. It's set in an ornate black wooden frame.

Approximate sizes:
Frame: 22.5cm x 17.5cm x 2.5cm / 9" x 7" x .9"
Embossed panel: 16.8cm x 11.8cm / 6.6" x 4.6"

All pieces ship ready to hang (unless otherwise noted), with either a D-Ring screwed into the backing or for larger pieces, two D-Rings and hanging wire. I try to take photos of my pieces from several different angles to show the way the light interacts with the metal surface and paint, and the three-dimensional embossed shapes and textures (any props/easels in the photographs are for display only and are not included in the listing).

Using a metal tooling technique known as repoussé, I emboss each piece by hand in my studio. After pressing the design into the pewter sheet, the surface is etched, bumped, scratched, marked, doused with a dark patinating solution and then polished back to give it a tarnished, aged look, leaving the metal surface stained with tones of blacks, browns, blues, golds and silvers – because this process is unpredictable, every piece is completely unique. The piece is then finished with gems, glass paint, enamels, iridescent pigments and sometimes patterned origami papers or vintage engraving imagery. Each wall piece is sealed with a layer of crystalline wax to protect the surface, mounted on mdf panel and framed up ready to hang. Each pendant is sealed into its backing with layers of crystal clear resin.

I may sometimes reuse patterns though I never use a stamp or machine embosser to create my artworks – every piece of metal art in this shop is handmade and one of a kind.
