Description

The Hopi are the authors of this tale of the Warrior Mouse. They also created a kachina doll in honor of him though there is no katsina (god) in their history.

Legend has is that a chicken hawk kept attacking the chickens on the mesa. None of the warriors could catch this villain. The mouse, who lived in a little kiva at the edge of the village, came to hear the chief and the town speak of this problem. He quietly spoke up and said, "I can catch this chicken hawk". Everyone laughed, but said go ahead and try. So the mouse prepared for days and asked the villagers to hold a warriors dance and ritual for him to aid his mission. Afterwards, Mouse got a branch of grease wood and carved a spear with a burnt point. After burrowing a hole inside, he stood this spear upright just below the rim of his tiny home.
Then he sat outside and waited...and waited...

The hawk watched in the distance at the dancing far into the night at what he saw as great foolishness by the people to appoint this tiny creature to this task. When the hawk saw the mouse out in the open, he saw an easy snack, but as he made his fast and furious descent he missed repeatedly, as the mouse dove down into his kiva. Eventually, the hawk impaled himself on the mouse's grease wood stake for diving too low towards the tiny kiva.

As a reward, the ancient Hopi tribal elders elevated the mouse to warrior status and this tale is told across the ages...

This medicine bag is 3 1/2 inches by 5 inches embellished with petrified wood beads and a 30 inch braided leather lanyard...

I just loved striking this mighty little warrior with his grease wood spear and his hawk marked shield on one of my medicine bags to show my honor for his many virtues.. Courage, confidence, innovation, independence, and the surprising use of an obvious disadvantage as the greatest strength...

What a mighty power animal to claim as your own...

FAQs

The section called Gallery CUSTOM from Sold is to help customers wanting a custom-made bag to find similar bag ideas. Select one of these and I will make a CUSTOM bag for you similar to it or of the same subject matter. The bag color is of my choice but I will try to accommodate a special request. These bags cannot be duplicated, obviously, being one-of-a-kind creations. Once a custom-made order is placed there are no exchanges, new selection or return.
Earthwayspirits medicine bags are hand crafted and hand painted, one of a kind. The craftmeanship of the leather pouch is substantial. The beading is secured with polyester threat to prevent breaking. The painting, however, will not withstand misuse of any kind; stretching, scraping or exposing it to any liquids. I use a fabric paint sealant to make the paint and ink more adherant. Under normal wear and tear, earthwayspirits medicine bags should last years. Store in a dry, dark and cool place...
Allow me 8 days to create your medicine bag and then add shipping time. Please inquire through Etsy messaging if you would like to request a specific color leather or beading be used, only if available.
