This Face Jug is made out of stoneware clay and was wheel thrown, sculpted, slip trailed, glazed and then fired to ^6 by Lucky Stradley (that would be me). Don't you just love the expressive eyes? I think they might just be the best quality. Face Jugs have a long and interesting history in the southern parts of the USA. This genre of Folk Art is highly collectible. This Face Jug could also be used as a bud vase. His name is "Shavar".

The tradition of pottery with faces dates back to Egyptian and Mesopotamian times and appears in many other cultures though out history. There are conflicting accounts, multiple stories, and varying theories about the 1st face jugs in the US. One account lists an unknown potter in Massachusetts as the creator of the 1st face jug in the US. Another account traces the 1st face jugs in the US to African slaves who worked on American plantations. One theory suggests that these early face jugs were used as grave markers by slaves. These jugs were supposed to ward off evil spirits. A South Carolina potter, who can trace his ancestors to slavery, states that "the idea was that the face jug would be ugly enough to scare the devil away from your grave so your soul could go to heaven."

It would certainly make a great piece to add to your collection (hint) or as a gift (hint).

I purchased an XXL yarn bowl and soon began using it every day for a long-term project- a baby blanket. The blanket and yarn fit perfectly in there but it meant that my bowl was taken for smaller side projects! I was interested in another, smaller bowl to take around the house with ease as well that I could use without disturbing my long-term project. This regular size bowl fits my needs perfectly! And it fits my 100g yarn cake as though they were made for one another. I’m so happy and pleased with the new addition to my family. It’s again super sturdy and easy to use, super cool and lovingly brought to life. At this rate, I had better finish this blanket before starting a new big project or my house will be filled with Lucky’s yarn bowls… not that that’s a terrible fate!

I had never heard of Lucky prior to this purchase but I now not only have a new cherished family member, I have a new artist to follow! I was looking for a yarn bowl that reflected my taste and was unique. I had wanted one for years but never found quite the right one that made it feel worth spending money. A lot of the yarn industry can be older and with more earthy or farmhouse taste. This piece stood out far and above every other bowl I’ve found up to this point. It shipped so quickly and soon I had a functional piece of art that I absolutely adore. I immediately started using it upon arrival and my quality of crochet life as well as my general happiness was boosted immensely. I will cherish this bowl from Lucky for years to come and I look forward to keeping up with the new things she creates to maybe build out a collection.
