Each panel could be used as a base for a quilt. It could also be enhanced by thread-painting. Or, it could simply be stretched, framed or hanged as is on the wall.
I choose textile dyes over textile paints because dyes do not affect the "hand" of the textile (unlike paint).
There is a magical, unique and unexpected result that comes from working with dyes... Dyes will take my art pieces to unexpected places I could never reach with paints!
I work on wet fabric by applying the colors with any tool that will produce the effect I am after. The finished panel will be soft to the touch (unlike fabric paint). The colors won't run or fade after repeated washings.
I use top-quality high thread count, mercerized 100% cotton fabric. (Mercerized cotton fabric yields to produce deeper, brillant and sharper colors following the process of dye-painting. It also improves the fabric's strength and enhances luster.)
Each piece is individually painted with professional-quality Procion MX dyes. Dyes bond with the fabric and doesn't change the hand or feeling of the fabric. The colors are brighter and the dyed piece will withstand repeated washings and strong light exposure.
I paint images/landscapes without thickening the dyes. When applied, dyes will move and migrate uncontrollably. What I enjoy so much is to try to control the "uncontrollable" to produce amazing and interesting effects.
I paint directly onto the fabric, layering colors in a wet-on-wet process that enables the shades to blend and diffuse. Each unique piece takes time and can be an exhausting process, but the one-of-a-kind result of the image emerging from it gives me joy.
