Description

Now on sale! Stunning antique vase designed by Alf Wallander for Rörstrand, Sweden, circa 1900. This large hand-painted faience vase is a magnificent example of the work of Wallander, who in his time was the dominant artist in Swedish Art Nouveau / Jugendstil style.

The vase has a prominent central section featuring a raised parade of lions or tigers, painted in ochre against a deep blue background. Above and below this are geometric sections in ochre and deep green-blue. The rim and base are decorated in blue and ochre with swirls and triangles. The vase is signed Dessin Alf Wallander (difficult to read), with the blue Rörstrand logo.

Wallander (1862-1914) was a Swedish artist, craftsman, and designer, known for his furniture, paintings, and striking ceramics for Rörstrand. This vase is a perfect example of his symbolist style.

The vase is in very good condition, with no chips or cracks but a fine crackle to the glaze and roughness on the bottom, as expected in a vase more than 100 years old.

Size: About 10 1/4 inches tall x 6 inches wide (26 x 15.2 cm)
