Darling of the Midway - Intricate Leather Waist Belt

Description

Presenting the 'Darling of the Midway' leather waist belt. This original design was inspired by the intricate trappings on late 19th and early 20th century amusement park rides, especially European Salon Carousels with their extravagant showfront facades, and the beautiful rounding boards of American Dentzel machines. As operators strove to out-do each other, their rides bloomed in all manner of opulent filagree and flourishes in a style that has been dubbed "Fairground Baroque." The ornamental wings are outstretched over a backdrop reminiscent of the striped canvas canopies that topped many a merry-go-round. Certain elements of the design were distressed to further recall an old carnival aesthetic with its worn and peeling layers of park paint.

For the svelte (like the mannequin pictured here), it can be worn at the hips, but for those who are a bit more curvy it can be worn on the upper waist or under the bust, which I think is particularly flattering.

The front, tooled panel is approximately 19" long by 5.5" tall and is attached with two sets of brass rivets to a 1.375" wide strap. Both the panel and strap are crafted from sturdy leather which is about a quarter inch (5mm) thick.

There are currently 4 notches in the belt spaced at one inch intervals, which gives it an overall wearable range from 37.5 to 40.5 inches. (Additional notches could be added upon request to expand this range a bit, however the buckle would not roughly align to the center back using the extra notches).

This belt is handcrafted of vegetable-tanned leather which has been carved and tooled into a low-relief sculpture. It was then stained to highlight the details and add some color to the design. It has been sealed with a protective coating to help ensure that it retains its loveliness for a long time, but please keep it dry and out of prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to help ensure its longevity.

Shipping policies

I typically ship items on Wednesdays or Thursdays, but I will always try my best to get items shipped within 2 business days after the date of payment. I will ship to the mailing address listed on the PayPal invoice unless specifically requested otherwise. If the item needs to be shipped to an alternate address, please include it in the notes to seller section upon check-out.

My smaller jewelry items are shipped in a jewelry box which is adorned with beautiful yarn and/or ribbon making it suitable to give as a gift. This box is then placed in a padded envelope for shipping. Larger items, including most leather craft pieces, are wrapped securely in bubble-wrap and shipped in a small box. ACEOs are shipped in a clear plastic sleeve for protection and display purposes. I try to use recycled bubble-wrap and other packing materials if I am able to do so.

For Domestic (US) orders, I will ship via First Class USPS mail. Insurance is recommended for items over $20.00 US, please contact me if you would like to insure your package or if you would like expedited shipping. On some items, the shipping price already includes insurance for domestic packages, please view the item's description for more information as to if insurance is already accounted for in the shipping costs. International orders are shipped via First Class Airmail, and unfortunately insurance is not available for international orders.
