This is a rare and unique bag. This Coach black leather Envelope Portfolio has made in New York City stamped on its creed with stamp number 395-2841. As far as I can tell there are none of these for currently for sale on the internet.

Coach originally marketed and named this bag a portfolio but as time went on it's pretty clear Coach knew this was much more flexible than a simple portfolio. In its 1989 listing Coach noted this could be used as a purse or a tote. Large totes are very popular among female attorneys for a carrying case in court or for conducting other business like depositions. I don't get to use one of these but my wife is an attorney and she says this style works well because it has enough room for a lot of books and files, the files are easily accessible and it has storage pouches for pens pencils and cell phones. Coach was certainly aware of this when it listed this bag in its 199 catalog:

No. 5190 envelope portfolio. $176.

Woman are finding the softer, less structured appearance of this legal sized brief ideal for much more than business. Spacious enough for a day's worth of work yet trim enough to function beautifully as a purse or a tote. There's plenty of room for newspapers, files or even your shoes. The envelope flap has no closure so it adjusts smoothly to cover the bags contents. An inside zipper pocket keeps keys, coins and wallet handy and secure. The mid-length straps are long enough to wear over the shoulder. Dimensions: 16 1/2" x 11" x 3 1/2". Black, British Tan, Burgundy, Flannel Gray, Mocha, Navy, Putty, Red, Tabac shown on page 2. Pictured in Putty.

Significance of Made in New York City.

NYC Coach bags are beginning to disappear at an alarming rate. This Coach leather bag is one of the most sought after Coach products by collectors because it is a "New York City Bag". These are some of the highest quality Coach products. "New York City" bags were made in the original Coach factory in New York City that operated from the late 1960's through the mid 1980's. Some, but not all, of the Coach bags produced during this era were designed by the well known American designer Bonnie Cashin. Consequently, when you buy a New York City Coach bag you are buying more than an accessory, you are making a potential investment.

The statement on the creed: "Made in New York City, U.S.A." verifies this bag's origin.
