Handmade Haitian metal art sculpture made from recycled oil drum.
Great for inside or outside. Wonderful folk-art piece depicting a stylized dog, probably an 80's to early 90's piece. It is nicely cut from a recycled steel drum, and is signed by the artist Al Mann, with a nice brown rusted patina. It is in excellent condition, showing beautiful signs of ageing, 14" x 12",.Couple of nails and it is ready to hang.
Oil drums are their raw material. The process of converting oil drums into sculptures is both a tribute to man's imagination and resourcefulness in the face of economic need. The artist first removes both ends from the drum, which are used to create smaller scuptures the drum is them stuffed with dried foliage and set on fire to remove oil residue. When cool it is sliced down the side and flattened into a 4'x6' metal canvas. The artist then draws the image with chalk and with hammer and chisel the design is cut out and the sculpture is born.
