Handmade Haitian metal art sculpture made from recycled oil drum.
Great for inside or outside. Wonderful folk-art piece of a mermaid with heavy bolt earring. Probably late 80's early 90's piece. It is nicely sculpted showing the scales of her tail and her corn-row/dreadlocks hair. It is signed by the artist, Jonas Balan with a nice brown rust patina. It is in excellent condition, considering the age and has spent some time outside. Size approx. 36" x 12".Couple of nails and it is ready to hang.
Oil drums are their raw material. The process of converting oil drums into sculptures is both a tribute to man's imagination and resourcefulness in the face of economic need. The artist first removes both ends from the drum, which are used to create smaller scuptures the drum is them stuffed with dried foliage and set on fire to remove oil residue. When cool it is sliced down the side and flattened into a 4'x6' metal canvas. The artist then draws the image with chalk and with hammer and chisel the design is cut out and the sculpture is born.
