All had a central Sundance Medicine Lodge with in a circular frame of poles constructed around a central sacred cottonwood tree young painted braves fasted and danced continuously. They would then pray to their creator and skewer themselves on hooks attached by leather leads to the center pole . As they danced they tore their flesh to prove the sincerity of their prayers.
