Description

Pink infinity - the third experiment with Pink space.

The original installation was site-specific, designed for the io gallery in Brighton which is a small white basement room underneath a shop in the north laines area of town. The gallery space is reached by a narrow staircase that goes straight down towards a wall it then takes a sharp left, down a few more steps, arriving in a 3 metre square basement space.

There is no light in the basement, apart from a strong magenta pink glow, coming from behind a cylindrical object that seems to warp space, where the straight lines of the room appear curved. You skirt around this distortion to the far side and discover the source of the glow, a relatively narrow slot filled with pink light. Cautiously you peer in to see the super illuminated pink tube. Enjoying the light and wanting more you try squeezing further through the narrow slot. Glancing down, the tube seems like a deep shaft or hole and you are standing on the edge looking down into infinity... you understand its all done with mirrors, but you can't escape the feeling... Some people smile, other scream!

The object is in the form of two, 2 metre high cylinders that stand vertically, and non-concentrically one inside the other. The inner cylinder is approximately 1m in diameter. The outer cylinder is half a metre larger, 1.5m in diameter, The space between the two cylinders hides the aluminium structure, lighting and other components.

The outer surface is wrapped with thin board and finished with a skin of mirrored Perspex. Almost invisible at a distance this completely reflective curved object gives a distorted view of it's surroundings.

Pink infinity - installation art / sculpture by Michael Seal - June 2004
Size: 1530mm diameter by 2040mm height.
