Travel back in time to the Fabulous Fifties when the Beat Generation subculture hit its peak of popularity...Black-clad pseudo-intellectual stereotypes known as "Beatniks" flocked the streets and coffee shops playing their bongo drums, holding poetry readings, and creating Dali-esque artwork that never ceased to intrigue!

The material restrictions that naturally ensued following World War II provided the perfect breeding ground for the growth of beat culture, a movement, which was founded in America and later moved to Europe, that was rooted in a philosophy of anti-materialism. Having an anti-establishment and almost anti-fashion attitude, what came to be known as "beatnik style" consisted of an understated dressing style, and although it was rebellious, it captured the beatniks' casual view of trends which was timelessly classic and très chic!

The clothing and accessories of beatniks were mostly black in color and included berets, black and white striped tops, turtleneck sweaters, skinny jeans and leotards. Audrey Hepburn’s all black outfit in the 1957 film Funny Face highlights her indifference to fashion and serves only to reveal the elegance and simplicity of beatnik style.

Also considered a traditional and stereotypical french clothing accessory, the stylishly infamous black beret was a beloved adornment of Parisian Beatnik fashionistas in the late fifties and early sixties. "Made in France" of "100% Wool" in the fifties, this is a traditional and authentic "Génuine Béret Basque". Making a beloved gift for a nostalgic and poetic beatnik fashion rebel or a treasured Paris souvenir relic, this vintage original 1950s black wool beret millinery couture hat will strikingly complement your favorite little black dress "LBD" or sassy beatnik style ensemble!

In excellent vintage condition for its age, this 1950s Genuine Basque Beret woolen felt cap does have a few tiny, light scattered areas of surface wear. I purchased this lovely vintage beret hat from the previous owner; she was a sweet elderly woman who confirmed that this beret was originally purchased in France in the 1950s. She had the beret secured to a hat stand mannequin head with antique hat pins. The hat pins that she used left tiny speck-dot sized indentations or punctures in the wool felt exterior once they were removed. These are only barely noticed in a few places on the surface of the hat and only when closely examining the beret in bright lighting. There are also other small, light areas of surface wear to the exterior wool felt, but fortunately nothing too substantial or noticeable. The black leather interior rim lining is cracking a little; it is beautifully edged in red leather. The interior dark mauve satiny silk lining also shows the pin-point holes previously mentioned from the past usage of hat pins.
