Passenger | Fine art installation | lighting installation
Description
Passenger - the beginning of my experiments with pink space.
Although the physics of a mirror are readily understandable, I still wonder when I look into our hall mirror, standing with the side of my face to an edge and gazing at a very oblique angle into the space beyond the wall.
The object from a distance, this large tomb like cuboid, looks almost impenetrable. Pink light however escapes from the far end, providing an invitation and revealing a narrow passageway. If you turn sideway the opening is just wide enough to enter, so you edge in. A partially hidden but familiar object in a connected space at the far end encourages you to believe it may be worth the effort to slide further in. You travel slowly down the passageway to reach a hall mirror shaped slot in the wall, you peer in and like Alice imagined, step over the threshold into the space beyond. You are now inside a pink cube, bathed in pink red light. The cube is too small for standing, but there is a nice chair. You sit and gaze, and think, and look back along the passage to the seemingly green tinted world outside and far away.
Passenger - a lighting installation by Michael Seal.
Produced for a 'Maze' artists group show called 'Housebound'.
An exhibition at the Phoenix Gallery, Brighton UK.
November - December 2001
