Description

This lovely necklace was inspired by a gorgeous piece of lampwork glass in the shape of an ancient Amphora vessel by https://www.etsy.com/shop/FireinIceLampwork. The vessel is about 1.25" tall and 1" across and is topped with a tiny cork stopper. The deep violet glass is decorated with touches of silver and is shaped with two handles like the ancient Amphora type vessels of Greek and Roman history.

I've paired this tiny vessel with transparent violet seed beads in a herringbone tube rope. Dark violet glass pearls and pewter seed beads and firepolished crystal accent the rope. The 20" long rope is finished with a peyote loop and toggle closure.

I created this piece for the Etsy Beadweavers team's April challenge "Pompeii". As I thought about the idea of Pompeii, what strikes me is the very common daily chores being done at the time of the volcanic eruption. I picture women carrying these Amphora vessels from the village center to their homes for their families, full of olive oil, fruit, water or most often wine.

The Latin word derived from the Greek amphoreus, a compound word combining amphi- ("on both sides") plus phoreus ("carrier") referring to the vessel's two carrying handles on opposite sides. Amphora is a Greco-Roman word developed in ancient Greece during the Bronze Age. The Romans acquired it during the Hellenization that occurred in the Roman Republic. The Romans turned the Greek form into a standard declension noun, amphora (pl. amphorae).
