Description

This spectacular Victorian jewel is designed in the form of a twelve pointed star, each point alternately set with soft gleaming pearls and bright turquoise, the three dimensional form set to the centre with a further turquoise cabochon encircled by twelve rose cut diamonds, with an estimated total weight of 0.25cts. Crafted in 15ct gold with a smooth closed back mount having both brooch and pendant fittings for versatility of wear.

Measurements: diameter of star 3.7cm

This piece was made circa 1880 in the Victorian era, a period in English history defined by the reign of Queen Victoria, from 1837 to 1901. In the 1880s to 1890s an extremely feminine style of dress became fashionable with pale colours and materials such as lace and tulle which were draped and ruched across the bodice. To adapt to this new style of fashion, jewellery became lighter and smaller with a more delicate romantic look. Star jewels appeared in large numbers in the form of pendants, brooches and hair ornaments and remained in great favour right up until the end of the century. For the Victorian’s pearls signified beauty, while turquoise symbolized true love.
