Why you want this instrument instead of software or more delicate electronics:

- Reliability: You want an instrument that doesn't crash in the middle of a performance, so choosing hardware over software is a good idea.
- Durability: This is a device that can easily survive drops, spills, weather or crushing (unlike many small synths, notebooks or laptops).
- Rarity: You'll be the owner of a boutique instrument that's carefully built only in limited quantities, helping you to stand out from other acts.
- Compatibility: If you're using a controller with MIDI-out over USB, you're ready.

Pocket Pokey is a boutique midi synthesizer built around an Atari Pokey audio IC and housed in a road-worthy metal case. The Pokey audio IC was used in the line of 8-bit Atari computers. It's much more advanced than the TIA IC that's found in the 2600 and it's also fully chromatic. The art work is a foil print in homage of the old Imagic game cartridges. The device has a footprint smaller than a credit card and it fits comfortably in a pocket. The video linked on this page contains a short audio demo. The Pocket Pokey midi synth connects to your usb-capable midi controller or DAW by a common mini USB to USB A cable. The audio out is by eighth inch jack.

You can find an audio demo by using this youtube link:

Here's what my customers are saying about the electronic musical instruments that I build:

"I found something that I think is pretty cool...I respect the person who put this together." -Retro Computing Roundtable, Episode 122.

"I mentioned the Pocket POKEY on episode 31 of ANTIC The Atari 8-Bit Podcast, which will be published soon."

"The Pokey is gorgeous by itself, but, holy moly, even the packaging is fantastic! Talk about professional! Man, I feel like I just came home from the Microsoft or Apple Store... This is certainly above and beyond! All I can say is WOW."

"...great products."

"Hey man, this thing looks awesome!"

"...it looks like a solid build, and I will def have some fun with it."

"Really neato noiz weapon!"

When connected to my Windows PC, my DAW recognizes Pocket Pokey immediately. This device has been tested on PC and separately on a hardware USB midi controller. It has not been tested on Mac or Linux, but you should be fine if you've already used an external USB midi output device with your computer. The device is small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket and a velvet pouch is included to store the device. The work is very much ‘by hand' aside from the custom PCB which I designed and had made at a board house. The build is solid and durable. The audio output is nice, loud and clear.

The design is based off of Brian Peter’s Pokey chip synth under the MIT license. This unit includes an “Atari Pokey” audio IC. It's a socketed Atari Pokey IC that can be removed and replaced if needed. I have some new-old stock Atari Pokey audio ICs on hand, but the biggest Pokey source says 'one unit per customer' due to low stocks of this vintage IC.

Returns are usually fine with me, providing there’s no damage or evidence of dissecting the item. I can also service this device for you in the future if you stay in touch. Shipping will be insured, of course, and tracking will be provided.
