SIAM Sterling Silver Vintage Mekkalah Goddess Folk Art Brooch (pre 1948) - Folklore story of Thunder and Lightning

15% Off, REDUCED from £30 to £25

This rare, unusually shaped and beautifully pattern etched white enamel and Sterling Silver niello work brooch was crafted in Siam, now Thailand. and tells the folklore story of how thunder and lightning were created. It was made pre 1948 as Siam finally became Thailand in 1948.

It depicts Mekkalah (Make-hala) the Goddess of Lightning, from Asian folklore, holding her magic crystal with intricate patterning around the brooch edges and over all the silverwork. This fine silver etching of Mekkalah and scroll detailing is absolutely beautiful, especially set against the glossy white enamel. I have used a jeweller's polishing cloth to put the shine back into this silver brooch, now beautifully bright.

This Siam brooch is more special than most. Strictly speaking it is not niello work as this brooch is infilled with a rare white enamel, not more common black niello, and its beautiful fine silver etching of hundreds of miniature dots over all the silver scrollwork patterning demonstrates a much higher level of artisan craftsmanship than most niello work brooches.

The brooch is stamped SIAM SILVER on the back. Please view my photos and use the lens option to see the brooch's fine detail.

****This beautifully intricate and unusual brooch is sure to get noticed and when it does you'll be able to share the story (described below) of how it was hand crafted and the folklore story behind it. It is absolutely stunning!

5- 6cm across

Excellent vintage condition, no damage to silver or enamel. I have used a jeweller's silver polishing cloth to restore the silver brooch and it now shines beautifully bright and even, not fully shown by my photos. Brooch back - The silver around the clasp attachment points is duller but otherwise very shiny back surface. Pin in excellent working order with rollover locking clasp. ****Please see my photos.

To make niello jewellery, a highly trained artisan carved out the silver metal brooch ensuring a raised border and raised character, picture and pattern. The 'hollows' were then filled with black niello compound (a metal compound) and it was fired and buffed. Final details to the characters and pattern were then engraved on to the areas of silver. ****Sometimes artisans made silver and enamel brooches, using the same carving technique but filling the hollows with coloured enamels but this was less common.

FOLKLORE STORY***** The Story of Mekhala and Ramasoon *****

Mekhala (Goddess of Lightning) and Ramasoon (God of Thunder) are the most popular folklore characters found on Siam Sterling jewellery. Their story is old and originated in Buddhist mythology.
Mekhala was a beautiful nymph, born of the sea and froth of the waves. Ramasoon fell in love with her and wanted to possess her but his love was spurned and she often mocked him before flying up into the clouds. One day Ramasoon set chase with his battle axe hoping to capture Mekhala. Dark clouds gathered round him hiding him from her so he threw his axe, but Mekhala had a magic jewel in her hand, a crystal which she used for protection. She held out her hand and a bright light flashed and blinded Ramasoon allowing her to escape. The axe missed its mark and rattled harmlessly across the heavens as she escaped. Thus we have the story of lightning and thunder.
