The Balfron Tower

This 27-storey slab block was a testbed for Ernö Goldfinger's (yes goldfinger!!) utopian housing ideals. The most striking characteristic of the building is the composition of volumes that makes up its distinctive profile.

Reinforced concrete gives the building its rigid structural grid, which visibly frames each residence. In a letter published in the Guardian at the time he explained: "The whole object of building high is to free the ground for children and grown-ups to enjoy Mother Earth and not to cover every inch with bricks and mortar."

The Trellick

Goldfinger's design is based on his earlier and slightly smaller Balfron Tower (in Poplar, east London), and is in effect a sibling building.

The tower was completed at a time when high-rise tower blocks were going out of fashion as local authorities were beginning to realise the social problems they caused. It was said to have inspired JG Ballard's novel, High Rise, in which residents collapse into anarchy and wage war on each other's floors. A destiny of desolation and demolition seemed inevitable. Although Wendy who runs a bookshop in the city, and a resident of the Barbican insists that the novel is more reflective of life in the Barbican Estate!

Something unexpected, something astonishing, has happened. Trellick has clawed out of the abyss. Against all the odds, it has hewn a renaissance from the concrete. Crime and disorder have virtually evaporated. Lifts glide, boilers hum, management works.

What is Brutalism?

Brutalism, or New Brutalism as it was sometimes referred to, has its roots in modernism but emerged as a movement against the architectural mainstream. It placed an emphasis on materials, textures and construction as well as functionality and equality.

There has been a shift in attitude towards the architectural style of Brutalism – buildings once dismissed as ugly have now found themselves the objects of new found affection. People are coming out in support for some of the world’s most iconic buildings – voices louder and prouder than ever.

When it comes to Brutalist architecture, London is home to some of the finest examples on the planet.

FAQs

Royal Mail gives a tracking number with every International delivery. This tracking is updated at various check points.

First checkpoint- When it leaves UK and reaches the destination country.
The next update in tracking will only happen once the parcel has gone through and cleared by customs. This could take anywhere between 5- 20 days depending on the country. So if the tracking has not updated in the meantime, your item is probably in queue at customs.
The next tracking update will happen when the item has come out of custom centre and reaches the local Post Office for delivery.

I cannot predict how long an international delivery can take. For example a parcel to France has taken 7 days, and in another time 30 days!
You can get the perfect sized frames at John Lewis. A4/ A3/ A2 with and without mounts. You can also get the prints framed at a local framer. The reason I don't ship frames is because the weight increases the price of shipping exponentially and no guarantee of non breakage. Since these are fairly standard size prints, it works out better to get the framing done at your end.
The word Giclée ("g-clay"), is derived from the French verb gicler meaning "to squirt or spray". It a fine art digital printing process combining pigment based inks with 100% cotton paper to achieve prints of superior archival quality, that will not fade for more than 70 years.

The process involves squirting or spraying microscopic dots of pigment-based ink onto high quality art paper or canvas. The image is colour corrected to attain the closest possible match to the original work if required.

In short- Matte prints are brilliant, but Giclee is special.
