Hand Spun, Handwoven Alpaca Collapse Weave Scarf in Coral and Gold Checks Dyed with Natural Dyes

Description

Hand spun on my Lendrum spinning wheel in overtwisted singles, this soft alpaca yarn was sourced here in Rochester, from a friend's farm. I dyed it in gold and coral colors, using onion skins (for the gold) and madder and cochineal (to achieve a range of color from soft pink to peach).

Technically, this is a collapse-weave structure, as I spun the yarn in overtwisted singles -- the gold in Z-twist and the coral in S-twist -- so that the fabric crinkles and gains dimension after washing. Aside from the technical details, this is a scarf with loads of color and personality! It's 4 feet long, including the short fringe, and 8 1/2 inches wide -- enough to drape casually around your neck or tie it once, cravat-style, for lots of warmth.

No need to dry clean. Simply immerse the scarf in lukewarm water that has maybe a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid or shampoo. Let it soak for maybe 10 minutes, rinse gently in lukewarm water, and hang to dry. Your scarf will be good to go!

Please note: because this is handwoven from overtwisted yarns, there are occasional bits of overtwisted yarn that curl out of the fabric. This is natural, not a flaw, and a mark of the character of the piece.

Thanks for visiting.

I am now the proud owner of this highly skilful, interesting and attractive piece of weaving. Much impressed by Denise Kovnat's work using Randall Darwall's warp yarn. To be treasured - and worn!
