Introduction by Jessica Zebrine
All my life I knew my mother’s sister was beautiful and exotic, a dancer in India and Hawaii, and completely out of reach. We had a photo of her in the hallway, and occasionally we got small cards or notes, but mostly she was a myth. Even her name, Prema Dasara, was unusual and mysterious. I felt a longing for a spiritual connection with someone from my family, from my roots, so I sent a heartfelt plea to a stranger’s E-mail, and through cyberspace I formed one of the deepest connections in my life. Then Prema introduced me to practices and a mythos that would inform every part of my belief system.
Why are we here? What is our great purpose on the planet? I strongly believe we are here to bring benefit to the world, and we do that by manifesting the wisdom, compassion, and power that we already have within. This is the core of the practices of Tara, Tibetan Buddha Goddess of Wisdom, Compassion, and Power. We each have all of the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas inside, and through practice and purifications, we can manifest them through an enlightened state.
The Tara Wisdom Cards are based on the lineage tradition of the "The Mandala Dance of the 21 Praises of Tara." This dance meditation practice was developed by my aunt Prema with the guidance of several Tibetan teachers. The Tara Dance has been performed by thousands of women of all ages, nationalities, and walks of life. Prema’s organization, Tara Dhatu (www.taradhatu.net), empowers and uplifts through the sacred arts.
Prema discovered a correlation between the many forms of Tara and the imagery of the 21 major arcana of the Tarot. After attending her Tara & Tarot workshop, I began the project of creating the Tara Wisdom Cards in 2003. I began with the 22 major arcana. I learned Tarot through this project, exploring the traditional Buddhist images and how they could correlate with the meanings of traditional Tarot cards. Then I worked on the minor arcana, comparing the traditional meanings to the dharma teachings.
At the time I was just learning to use Photoshop, self-publishing was rare, and crowdfunding did not exist. For years I searched for a better artist to bring my vision into reality. In 2014, while recovering from breast cancer, I discovered that the artist I sought was inside me already. With 11 years of Photoshop experience, more opportunities for self-publishing, and a successful Kickstarter campaign, I was able to realize my dream with the production of 1,000 decks.
The cards were born out of years of study, practice, meditation, and divination. The 22 Tara images themselves were drawn and painted digitally by me based on the line drawings of the Suryagupta traditional images of Tara found in Bokar Rinpoche’s book Tara: The Feminine Divine. There are many, many color variations in different traditions. I primarily used the colors for each Tara from the Mandala Dance tradition, though for most I chose secondary and supplemental colors. I learned meanings behind the many different Buddhist symbols and ritual objects in the images.
For the minor arcana, I relied more closely on my experiences of the four elements in modern Paganism. My elemental interpretations are a blend between the Tibetan and Western elemental traditions.
The deck can be used for meditation or as a divinatory system. Divination is opening to the messages of the Divine. Anyone can read cards for divination. Just look at the images and let them tell you a story. Trust yourself. The pages of this book will help explain some of the symbolism of the cards, but the most significant reading will come from your own interpretation.
The Tara Wisdom Cards are a tool for experiencing the dharma and finding your own glimpses of enlightenment. The images are like windows and doors to let the dharma come through.

Wonderfully illustrated and written. A well crafted companion to the Tara Wisdom Cards.
These cards are beautifully done, bringing in many spiritual and natural themes in a positive way. And I've found the e-book to be a very informative supplement, providing much detail about what is represented by each card and the symbolism included in each illustration. The e-book also ties these wisdom cards to the cards found in a traditional tarot deck and shares more background about tarot concepts and history and those of Tara. This deck and e-book are giving me a deeper understanding of both Tarot and Tara, and I appreciate the new perspectives!
I bought these cards as gifts since I bought a deck, was a supporter of the creator’s project in the making of them. They are beautily done and the artists story of how she came about making them is fascinating! She has supportive books on how to use them. Jessica also gives insiteful and fun workshops (which I have attended) on how easy it is to learn to use them! Everything came in a timely manner and arrived in good shape! I highly recommend her products. Also, she gives further understandable insights into Tibetan spirituality and its symbols for Westerners. I highly encourage everyone to check our this product also great gifts!
