Botanial: Hyssopus officinalis

Origin: Spain

Hyssop is a perennial evergreen like sub-shrub that grows to a height of two feet with lanceolate leaves and bluish purple flowers. There are four primary subspecies of hyssop but Hyssop officinalis is the main oil producing variety.

Grown in the temperate areas of Asia, Mediterranean, Russia and Europe it is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops to obtain an essence with a sweet camphoraceous top note and a warm spicy-herbaceous undertone.

Aromatic: Oil of hyssop occasionally turns up in perfumes. A small amount might be added to heavily scented potpourri along with thyme.

Hysop has a strong medicinal camphor like odor and hyssop has a history of being used as a cleansing herb

Uses: Stimulant, diaphoric, expectorant and vulnerary; for coughs. rheumatism, fevers and sore throats. Please note the safety precautions below. Has been used to treat Black Toenail.

If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils with children and give children only the gentlest oils at extremely low doses.

It is UNSAFE to use hyssop during pregnancy because it might cause the uterus to contract or start menstruation. These effects could lead to a miscarriage. It’s not known whether hyssop is safe to use during breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Children: It’s UNSAFE to give hyssop to children.

Seizures: If you have a history of having seizures, don’t use hyssop. It might trigger seizures or make them worse.

It is safest to consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using oils with children. A skin patch test should be conducted prior to using an oil that you've never used before.
