Wall mounted watertight raku ceramic birch tree trunk design ready to ship to you from my studio in Lapland. This is primitive yet functional art at its best!

The source of inspiration for this delicate and beautiful Raku vase is Koivu, Finnish for Birch. I think the birch tree is the most feminine tree of the forest, a part of every Finn's soul.

Bring the outside in and display tree branches in this waterproof wall hanging birch vase.

Please note the each vase is One Of A Kind. Therefore the photographs given are only an illustration of the product you will receive. The birch markings will be similar, but not the same.

Now you have a chance to start your own unique Koivu collection and display it with pride. Koivu brings warmth to your home; a piece of nature for everyday life.

{Raku}
The product is made from clay and fired in a ceramic oven and then glazed with my “Koivu” glaze. I do the raku firing outside in the harsh elements of Lapland's nature. After quickly reaching a temperature of about 1000 degrees Celsius (1800 Fahrenheit) the product is then placed in a tin container filled with wood chips or pine twigs that catch on fire. The thermal shock causes cracklings that become black with the smoke. Finally it is dipped in cool water or snow as we have a lot of that on hand in Lapland! This sets the final design for the network of cracklings characteristic to raku, making each item a one of a kind piece.

{Story}
The name of my collection is “Koivu” which means birch in Finnish. Birch trees are very important to Finns. Almost every family has their own "Home Birch" in the yard, which "protects" the family standing still while the wind blows and snowstorms rage. The leafy, fragrant boughs of the birch trees have many uses. In the summer they are displayed like flowers in a vase and larger branches are made into trellises for weddings and other celebrations like the Midsummer Solstice. Finns also use the aromatic young birch branches to gently whisk themselves with in the sauna, which has a relaxing effect on the muscles and an exfoliating effect on the skin.
