This is an authentic antique children's book published by VanAntwerp Bragg & Co. in June 1879,in Cincinnati.
Has stitched binding that appears to be a repair and is in very delicate vintage condition.
Some of the pages are torn, and a child has written on some pages, and some drawings are colored in probably by same child, and we think that the first ten pages are missing, possibly explaining why the binding was stitched.

Quote from "slate work" on page 80:
God made the little birds to sing,
And flit from tree to tree,
'Tis He who sends them in the spring
To sing for you and me.

The entire text gives you a great idea of how children were schooled during the late 19th century.
Keep in mind that at that time, many, if not most, children were home-schooled, although public education was just starting to spread across the country.
From the preface of the book, it's publisher's appear to aim the book for either teachers or parents.
A teacher might be fascinated by the teaching method that is employed in the book.
This book could be a valuable addition to a collection of books from that era.
