A bit about my process of woodblock printmaking:

I begin a print by walking and meditating. Usually this happens while I am about my daily life. I try not to go looking for these moments because they cannot be found, they can only be experienced when caught by surprise. I carry my camera constantly in order to capture these haiku moments.

This reference photo is the basis of a sumi ink or graphite drawing. This drawing is then transferred to a thin, strong paper called tengucho washi. The tengucho is glued with rice paste to a sustainably harvested shina plywood from Japan.

Everything except the drawing is carved away with sharp gouges and chisels. This process can take anywhere from 8-40 hours depending on the size, complexity and number of blocks used. The wood block is then washed to remove the tengucho and glue.

Next, the block is inked either with a brayer or a bake (BAH-kay) brush depending on the type of ink I am using. Paper then laid on the top of the inked block and the ink is transferred to the paper with a bamboo baren.

The baren replaces a mechanical press. It is the baren that gives the individual characteristics of each print. That is why hand-lifted prints are all originals even though they are created with the same block.

The printing process is repeated until there are enough prints for the edition. After inspection misprints are discarded and the remaining prints are dated, signed and editioned.
