Coach began manufacturing the Baxter Bag in 1992. This Coach Baxter Bag was manufactured sometime between 1992 and 1994 because it has a pre-orderly creed Leatherware Stamp which Coach discontinued using in 1994. The number on the stamp is 0460-228. This creed designation was placed on Coach bags produced from the mid 1980's until 1994 when Coach began placing its 'orderly creed' on bags which contained a code for month, year and place of manufacture along with the official style number.

The Baxter Bag was introduced by Coach in its 1992 Edition Catalog as an addition to its "Classic Collection". Most bags listed in this shop are part of what Coach calls its 'Classic Collection". The Coach Classic Collection contains signature bags that Coach made in its New York Factory from 1941 to 1994, like the Classic Shoulder Bags, City Bag, Stewardess Bag, Basic Bag, Companion Bag, Convertible Clutch, Willis Bag and like bags. I could go on and on describing these classics, but Coach summed up the kind of bag that belongs to their Classic Collection like this:

'The Classic Collection'

Logo treatments and trendiness have no place in our philosophy of classical design. This collection achieves the understated elegance that has been at the heart of our concept since 1941. Even the leather itself - supple, durable, natural cowhide - is a classic." [ From Coach 1992 Edition Catalog, page 18.]

Clearly this Baxter Bag, new in 1992, falls in this category of Coach Classics. This bag has that substantial yet supple and durable leather construction you immediately recognize as Coach. [ I think the color is saddle but they made a Baxter Bag in Stone color in 1993 which may be a more accurate description of the color. ] It has two interior pockets, one a slip pocket and the other zippered. It has the industrial brass zipper, the padded handles and the solid brass hardware. It has solid brass feet and strap rings. When it first listed the Baxter Bag in 1992, Coach described it this way:

A. New Baxter Bag. No. 9903. $220. Extended top zipper closure. Inside open pocket. Inside zipper pocket. Reinforced leather handles. Four brass feet on bottom. 48 inch detachable shoulder strap. 12 ½ inches x 8 1/4 inches x 5 ½ inches. Black, British Tan, burgundy, Navy, putty, tabac. Pictured in Navy.

Length: 12 ½ inches

Height: 8 1/4 inches

Width: 5 ½ inches

Strap Length: 48 inches

This bag is in very good condition. It has no rips, tears or holes. It is structurally sound. However, like most bags in their 20's it has an experienced look by way of scuffs and scratches that develop over time. In addition, there are small ink pen marks on one side of the bag and very faint drip stains. These are not apparent except on close examination but I have photos of them in the collage along with tags showing where they are.
