Description

This is a very nice Coach Tabac Leather Standard Saddle Pouch Bag # 9590 which was a medium size shoulder bag made by Coach in New York City in the 1970's and 1980's. My opinion is this bag is tabac but others may think it's putty. I have the colors offered by Coach at the time this bag was made in the 4th photo in the listing along side a photo of this bag so you can decide for yourself.
The Coach creed stamp states this bag was made in New York City and displays registration number is: 357-7233.

This is another one of those early Coach styles reminiscent of the early American pioneer days where one can't help but imagine seeing a leather clad American Pioneer like Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett climbing over a mountain or hiking across a prairie carrying either a bag very much like this bag or like the Courier. Like the Courier it brings out the ten year old boy inside me whose memories of Disney's Davy Crockett persist in spite of the passage of more than six decades.

This bag was made in New York City with soft and supple full grain leather in tabac. The design will compliment any wardrobe. The interior has a zipper pocket and and extra compartment under the flap. The soft leather shoulder strap has large brass buckles at the ends that can be adjusted for length. It also has the original hang tag. The Saddle Pouch was made in two different sizes. This is is the smaller (Standard) version. It measures 9" × 8"× 2". This is what Coach had to say about the both sizes of the Saddle Pouch in the 1983 Fall Catalog:

Number 9585 Saddle Pouch Large $116
Number 9590 Saddle Pouch Standard $100

Buckled shoulder pouches with authentic solid brass saddlery hardware in two sizes. Each has a leather-like flap, inside zipper compartment, and an extra compartment under the flap. Mocha, British Tan, Black, Navy, Red, Burgundy, Tabac, Putty

Large: 11" x 9" x 2" Standard: 9" x 8" x 2"

Dimensions:

Length: 9 inches
Height: 8 inches
Width: 2 inches

Strap Length: 45 inch total with 22.5 inch drop

Condition:

This bag was well maintained and, in my opinion, falls within the range of very good to excellent condition. It has no rips, tears or holes. It is structurally sound. However, it does have scuffs and scratches. Please look at the photos for a further example of its condition.

We do have another Standard Saddle Pouch for sale in British Tan which was also made in New York City. To see this bag link to: https://www.etsy.com/listing/237090522/anniversary-sale-rare-nyc-coach-british?ref=shop_home_listings

Significance of NYC Coach

This Coach leather bag is one of the most sought after Coach products by collectors because it is a "New York City Bag". These are some of the highest quality Coach products. "New York City" bags were made in the original Coach factory in New York City that operated from the late 1960's through the mid 1980's. Consequently, they are disappearing at an alarming rate and when you buy a New York City Coach bag you are buying more than an accessory, you are making a potential investment.

THE FACTORY

This bag was made in the NYC Coach Factory which means it is in the class of the most sought after vintage Coach bags. Coach no longer produces bags in the U.S.A. and the Factory is gone. The quality of the bags manufactured at the Coach NYC factory and the skills of the leather workers who produced them was memorialized in a book released in 1977 entitled "The Factory".

"The factory occupies two floors of a 12 story building in downtown New York City and employs about 125 members of the Pocketbook and Novelty Workers Union Local No. 1 AFL-CIO. It is the Coach Leatherware factory, and the people who work here make bags and belts out of leather and brass.... Looking around the factory, out of town visitors are always struck by its rich ethnic mix. Like a microcosm of the City itself, every race, creed and national origin seems to be represented...2nd generation New Yorkers, both black and white... Italians ....Poles..., Germans, Hungarians, Lithuanians, and Russians - as well as Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and a number of other Hispanics from Central and South America..... Here in New York City we have recruited workers from what is undoubtedly the world's largest pool of skilled labor, and this has enabled us, over the years, to choose from the best in each category..... "The leather goods industry is a highly competitive one. If Coach bags and belts have enjoyed a certain success in this field, it is precisely because they are made in New York City by those people whose skill, energy and quick intelligence make it possible to turn out a quality product at a fair price. GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC OR ALL MONEY BACK. We understand there are counterfeits and knockoffs of vintage products by well known manufacturers for sale all over the internet and in other market places. We use multiple procedures to assure the products we sell are authentic. One procedure we use is to research authenticity through vintage manufacturer catalogs and to report our research in the listing. Sometimes we include a snippet from the catalog to corroborate our research and educate you about the history of the bag. The purpose of reporting what the manufacturer says about its product in the catalog is to verify our research on the authenticity and to educate you about how a vintage product was portrayed in the past. It is not intended to hold our shop out as a representative of the manufacturer. However, if it turns out we are wrong or our research is not correct we guarantee that if we sell you a product represented to be manufactured by a reputable company like Coach, Cole Haan, Ghurka, Filson, Christian Dior, Hartmann, Gucci, or any other company and you have competent evidence that the product is not authentic we will refund your purchase price and delivery cost. In addition, we will pay for return postage.
