Halston was discovered by Lilly Daché in Chicago. He then moved to New York and in 1958 he went to work at Bergdorf Goodman in their millinery department. Halston started his own business, Halston Ltd., in 1968.

Halston revolutionized the way women dress and is one of the few designers, to define what is American fashion. Throughout most of the seventies he epitomized the glamour, as well as the decadence of the era, becoming a central figure in the nightlife scene of New York's Studio 54. He was known for his flattering body-conscious clothing in jersey and silks.
