Hawaiʻi ʻŌʻō, by Caren Loebel-Fried, is an 11x14", limited edition fine art print from an original hand-pulled, hand-colored block print. The materials used in this museum quality print are all of the highest quality, printed on acid-free, 100% cotton paper, with archival, pigment-based inks. The art comes inside a resealable poli bag, with an acid-free backing board, description, and certificate of authenticity.

The Hawaiʻi ʻŌʻō was a honey-eater living in the forest canopy of Hawaiʻi Island. The birds yellow feathers were highly prized by early people of Hawaiʻi, who used them in their feather work. People brought to the islands pigs, cows, and sheep, who became feral and ate the young native plants growing in the understory of the forest, destroying the habitat of the ʻŌʻō and other native birds. Mosquitoes gave the native birds diseases, and rats and mongoose ate their eggs. The last of the magnificent Hawaiʻi ʻŌʻō was seen in 1934.

Caren learned the ancient art of block printing from her mother. She volunteers and researches on Midway Atoll, Kīlauea Point, and other wild places around the Hawaiian Islands. Caren creates art for many organizations, supporting the work they do on behalf of wildlife, conservation, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian Culture.

Hawaiʻi ʻŌʻō appears in Caren’s book, Manu, the Boy Who Loved Birds. Caren’s other award winning illustrated books include, A Perfect Day for an Albatross, Naupaka, Lono and the Magical Land Beneath the Sea, Hawaiian Legends of Dreams, Hawaiian Legends of the Guardian Spirits, Pua Polu, the Pretty Blue Hawaiian Flower, Tree of Souls, and Legend of the Gourd.

This art was created for Conservation Council for Hawaiʻi for a poster and book about the extinct species of Hawaiʻi. The poster will be distributed to every public, private, charter, and Native Hawaiian Language immersion school in the state. Conservation Council for Hawaiʻi was established in 1950 and has become one of the largest and most effective wildlife organizations in Hawaiʻi. Conservation Council for Hawaiʻi is dedicated to protecting native Hawaiian plants, animals, and ecosystems for future generations. Ordered four prints including Midway and Alala Love - I have both of them as jigsaw puzzles and had to get the prints :-) Quick shipping and very well packaged up - Caren included a free extra as thanks which was totally unexpected. Beautiful artwork - now I have to visit another favorite Etsy store to get frames made!

Caren Loebel-Fried's "Kilauea Point" is a gorgeous print, exceedingly crafted and well-packaged for delivery. Caren's artwork is radiant. I've put "Kilauea Point" on the wall alongside my earlier purchase of the equally beautiful "Midway." And I'm already imagining a third print by Caren! And a fourth!
