Bob Gibson's regular-season numbers in 1968 were staggering: 22 wins against only nine losses; a microscopic 1.12 earned run average; 268 strikeouts; and an incredible 13 shutouts. So it came as little surprise when he continued to sizzle in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Facing 31-game winner Denny McLain and the Detroit Tigers, the Cardinals' flame-throwing right-hander simply dominated. It's October 2, 1968, and Gibson has just blown a called third strike past Detroit slugger Willie Horton to wrap up the Cardinals' 4-0 victory. It is Gibson's World Series record 17th K of the day. The previous batter, Norm Cash, had been strikeout victim No. 16, enabling Gibson to break Sandy Koufax' record of 15 Ks in the 1963 Series against the Yankees. Gibson allowed only five hits in the game, walked just one and fanned at least one batter in every inning, striking out the side in the second and ninth-truly one of the greatest performances in World Series history.
This lithograph is printed on 100% acid-free paper. It is numbered and signed by the artist in pencil in the lower margin.
