Description

** See SPECIAL SHIPPING NOTE below **

Packed away for decades and ready to take center stage at your next gathering is this stunning and large MCM Atomic turquoise and gold speckled California Originals Lazy Susan serving set which includes six pieces of pristine pottery that nest atop a 16” diameter revolving base. The set was never used, as evidenced by an original foil label and a price sticker that are still affixed.

The fabulous one-owner California pottery set was received as a wedding gift c1960, packed away and forgotten about — leaving it in like-new condition for its new owner! The glaze remains bright shiny on each vibrant turquoise/aqua piece, further accentuating its gold speckled design. The gold splattering is concentrated on the edges of all but the round center dish itself.

You need to have some serious counter or table space to accommodate this striking set, as it measures about 18.75” across when all six ceramics pieces are nestled atop the faux wood turntable. When fully “assembled” the set weighs in at a whopping 10 pounds!

While most Lazy Susan sets have a small dip bowl in the center, this has more of what I’d call a covered casserole dish. The round dish portion measures 8.1250” across the top and stands 3.1250” tall without the lid. When the lid is on, the dish measures 5.25” tall to the top of the gold handle. Affixed to the dish’s underside is a paper price sticker that shows it was bought at “Penneys” (JCPenney today) for $10. (I don’t know if that was for the entire set, or just the covered casserole portion.)

The casserole lid itself is a work of art! Even though it sits atop a round dish, the lid is more of a rectangle with rounded corners that gracefully swoop upward. The lid measures 8.75” by 10” at its widest points. The 1.3750” diameter gold-tone knob is 1.25” tall. Still affixed to the lid is a gold-on-blue foil label whose shape echoes that of the lid itself. The label reads, “California Originals / Torrance / Calif.” One corner of it is bent, but still attached.

I had hoped to find the perfect word to sum up the shape of the set’s four curvaceous side dishes, but I’ve failed on that front! At least I’m not alone: I’ve seen the shape described as “somewhat biomorphic,” “boomerang shaped” and “leaf shaped with a center leaf dish.” In any case, each dish measures 6” by 11.8750” at its widest points. They’re designed so that one end of each dish lies atop its neighbor.

Incised on the underside of the four curvy side dishes is “Cal. Orig 618 U.S.A.” Incised under the casserole dish is “U.S.A.” and, under its lid, “618.C.U.S.A.” (Also under the lid are three unglazed stilt marks that date to its creation.)

There are no condition issues to report with the ceramic pieces. The turntable is made of some type of weighty faux wood that has some light scuffs/scratches due to poor storage. It spins nicely.

According to an article on the website CollectorsWeekly.com, “California Originals: Heirlooms of Tomorrow was founded in the 1940s by William Bailey. The pottery was first located in Manhattan Beach, but in the '50s was moved to Torrance, California and renamed California Originals. It is believed that California Originals closed their doors sometime around 1980. Their vases, ashtrays, lazy susans, bowls and serving trays … are typically found in beautiful (often bright) colors accented with gold decoration.”

Rest assured that your new-old California Originals serving set will be carefully packed, double boxed, and shipped fully insured and with tracking via FedEx Home Delivery service. (USPS Priority Mail service is cost prohibitive due to the set's weight.)

*** SPECIAL SHIPPING NOTE: The listed shipping price for this 10-pound set (excluding double-boxed packaging) is an estimate for shipping from Ohio to the west coast via FedEx Home Delivery. If you’re having this item shipped closer to Ohio, I’ll promptly refund any overage of $2 or more. Or, send me your zip code before buying and I’ll gladly calculate the shipping cost to your house!

Please use zoom mode to check out details in the photos, as they play an important role in the item’s description. And please don’t hesitate to convo me if you have questions about this item or would like to see more pictures before buying, as I want you to be 100% pleased with your purchase!
