Item details

Vintage from the 1960s

Materials

wool, nylon

Andre Courrèges launched his Space-Age collection in 1964. The shapes of his clothes were geometric: squares, trapezoids, triangles. The main features of his ultra-modern, uncluttered look spread quickly throughout the fashion world. This stunning black wool jumper-dress is a proper example of his vision. With two snaps at the front and welt pockets it embodies his iconic a-line construction. It comes with the original nylon turtleneck that can be layerd underneath for colder months. Garment is fully-lined with black silk-rayon.

34" Bust

30" Waist

45" Length

In excellent vintage condition.

Wear is consistent with age and use.

Courrèges was trained as a civil engineer, but he chose a career in fashion. He worked throughout the 1950s as a fitter at the House of Balenciaga. He left in 1961 to form his own business. His first collections showed traces of the Balenciaga influence, but he soon began working in a new direction.

In 1964 Courrèges showed the first of his “space age” inspired collections. He was the first in Paris to show the mini skirt and tunics over trousers. His work was wildly popular, and thus, widely copied.

Though associated most closely with the 1960s, Courrèges continued to operate through the 1970s and 1980s.
