Is it a creature from deep beneath the sea or far from outer space... perhaps just from outer mind. This is a perfect small sculpture created with a bit of whimsy and mystery which is comfortable resting on a desk or perched on a shelf.

Because of the nature of the tendrils and the general flexibility of the medium there is some room for adaptation by you. I have always felt that art is very personal and I hope that whoever adopts my art will feel comfortable enough with it to make it their own.

I have been wanting to create fiber sculpture again for a long while now and circumstances have brought me back to it. This is Number I in a series of organic abstract fiber sculptures crocheted out of jute. The size of this one in natural is approximately 8" x 6"

I enjoy working with jute as a fiber because it gives a very sturdy matrix. I can get my little tubes to stand up very nicely and I enjoy greatly the interplay of light and texture and form.

I first learned to crochet from my high school art teacher. He had just come back from a summer art studio and had learned free form crochet. It was very freeing to have learned to crochet free form objects rather than being held to the restrictions of a pattern for mittens or a scarf. Later I learned to do those as well, but I have always felt I could crochet a house with the right materials.
