It turns out that this label has an interesting piece of history behind it--the company, United States Lines, was founded in part by Kermit Roosevelt (Theodore's son) in the 1920s.

Once boasting the largest and fastest ocean liner ever built (SS United States), competition from airliners moved the company to stop passenger services in the late 50s.

After a long and colorful history that spanned over 60 years and included unknowingly employing Nazi spies during WWII, today the only remains of the company are the few surviving piers in NYC (one of which now used by NYPD)--and these luggage labels.

Never used. Gummed back.
