This costume is a meticulous re-creation of the signature dress worn by sarcastic mother witch Endora (Agnes Moorehead) on the classic TV series “Bewitched.” I designed and made this costume in the late 1990s for myself and wore it 3 times.

The dress is sized for a petite woman who’s skinny, short, and small busted. (I’m 5’2” tall and weighed about 100 pounds when I wore this dress.) It’s shown here on my dress form that’s covered in mod floral fabric.

The dress measurements are:

bust: 37.25 inches
empire waistline (just below bust): 29.5 inches
total center back length, from base of neck to bottom hem: 53 inches
sleeve length: 27 to 28 inches
distance across back where top of shoulder meets sleeve: 13.75 inches

The empire-waist underdress is made of lightweight woven synthetic fabric in bright lilac. Since the fabric is not knit, it doesn’t stretch, so the snugly fitted bust and sleeves have little give. The overdress is sheer green chiffon, connected to the underdress at the neckline.

The costume’s defining feature is the shapeable pointed raised “vampire” collar – it is constructed with a grid of wires enclosed in interfacing, so the collar can be posed in any shape desired.

The tapered long sleeves are gathered lightly at the wrist with elastic that’s now rather saggy, but the sleeves are snug enough to gather naturally at the wrist when worn. The bodice is lined, and all the inside seams are finished neatly, some with french seams, to prevent ravelling. The center front laces are made of the same lilac dress fabric. The empire waist is elasticized and covered by a self-fabric belt that’s held in place with thread loops and hook-and-eye closures.

This costume has always been stored in a long plastic bag, so it is quite clean. There is one tiny stain on the front bust area, one on the collar, and a couple of vague watery stains near the hem. I’ve always gently hand-washed the dress, hung it out to dry, and lightly ironed it. The wires inside the collar have a tendency to rust when washed, bleeding onto the collar fabric, so it’s a good idea to dry-clean the dress.

When designing this costume, I referred to “Bewitched” still photos and promo materials found on the internet about a decade ago – similar to those shown here. As I watch “Bewitched” today (on WGN America, weekday afternoons and Sunday nights), I realize the colors of this dress are a bit too soft – Endora’s actual purple and green look more lurid. I recently noticed for the first time the shoes Agnes Moorehead wore with this dress – kitten-heel leather pumps in deep lavender.

As shown in the photo, I wore this costume with a red wig which I curled, teased, and sprayed to big-hair height. (It’s unfortunate I no longer have that wig to include here.)

The costume will ship within a day after purchase, by USPS Priority Mail or FedEx Ground. Delivery within the contiguous U.S. will take at most 3 to 4 days.

When wearing this costume and impersonating Endora, it’s helpful to be equipped with her vocabulary – the many scornful misnomers she invented for her son-in-law Darrin while pretending not to remember his name:

Durweed, Durwood, Dagwood, Dogwood, Darwood, Darwick, Dalton, Dar-Dar, Darius, Darwin, David, Dawson, Delbert, Dennis, Denton, Derek, Derwin, Dexter, Digby, Dino, Dobbin, Donald, Dorian, Dumbo, Dum-Dum, Dumpkin, Duncan
