There is an interesting mix of cultures and conflicting stories in this colorful, eye-catching long necklace. That's why I call it Tradewind Treasure. The large center bead was sold to me as an antique bead from India. It looks, however, more Tibetan, perhaps made by the Tibetan Buddhists that live in the north of India. I have seen similar large beads priced at $75 plus. I purchased the smaller granulated silver/gold beads in India but they look much more like the old ethnic silver beads from Turkmenistan which are more valuable. They probably passed through many hands on their way to India.

The old red and yellow glass beads are African trade beads originating in Bohemia, perhaps dating as far back as the slave trade. Their pitted surface attest to their value and age. The colorful thin vinyl disks at the back of the necklace are made from vulcanite, the same material that was used to make vinyl records which is why they are known as Vinyl Record Beads. Natively, they are called "jigada beads." They are vintage, and hail from Mali.

There are two beautiful Balinese silver beads at the back near the heavy sterling silver hook-and-eye clasp; the earring wires are also sterling silver. Whichever stories you choose to believe, this necklace is a real treasure and great for promoting interesting conversations. It's such a dynamic, beautiful piece!
