This image is about dedication

For me – as well as countless other young boys – the beginning of high school was the point at which football became more than simply a recreational sport. It became a way of life – more like a religion than a sport. Practice days were “strictly business” where there was no room for anything but total dedication. This was especially true for my school which was very small compared to those we competed with.

Making the team wasn't a guarantee that a player would see actual game play. It usually meant a year or two as a second or third string substitute – a "backup". During those years, your biggest contribution was during practice where you provided the best oposition you could for the first string players as they parepared for the up-coming game. It was here that skills were improved and perfected in preparation for the day when a player might "graduate" the first string and be tested in the real "battle".

As I look back, I think there was something much more important going on. It was here as much as in our studies that dedication was tested. Players who were willing to invest in improving their skills as backups would usually be the ones who went on in later years to be first string players. We learned that natural talent – although a welcome gift in any player – was not the only ingredient for success. Dedication to hard work – on the field, on the exercise floor and at team meetings committing the play book to memory – was the real key to success.

This kind of dedication was evident in many players but even more so in the man who coached the team. His dedication as a coach for a high school football team was unparalleled. But it was only a symbol of a much deeper dedication as a teacher to his students and as a man to other human beings.

As the young boy stands looking at his football hero, he also stands next to the influence of our teacher who always wore his trademark baseball cap on the practice field and on the sidelines during games. The plaque on the wall says "Thanks Coach" in gratitude for his years of dedication.
