What happens when you lose an auction on ebay for a toy you covetted for years because your computer simply wouldn't log on to the internet right before the auction was about to end? You bemoan the loss. You curse AOL (or whatever your provider) You want that item that much more but it's pretty rare and the likelihood of seeing it again is very slim.

Some people would let it go. Some would become passionately obsessed with finding it whatever the cost. Me, your friendly neighborhood creative pal . . .well, I would have to figure a way to handmake a substitute.

So here, I give you my version of the Ideal Toys Messenger From Mars spaceman with his ray gun riding his space cycle. And as long as I was making the toy, I found the artwork to make the display stand for it as well. And of course, as long as I was making the display, I might as well turn it into a lamp so it has some purpose beside reminding me how much I love this toy.

In the 50's they made what they called TV lamps. They would sit on top of the television, usually a ceramic piece with an image in the foreground and something in the background with a very soft warm light in between. That way, when you turned off all the other lights in the room, this one would give off a glow that made you cozy while watching your favorite tv show.

My Messenger from Mars is very large. 14 fabulous inches wide and 10 inches high. It is made of wood with the artwork covering the display base and then the image of the rider adhered to wood cut out in the exact shape. The sides and backs are painted black to give it that shadow effect.

As you look at the pics, the first is with the light off. Then there are 3 views of the light to show you where the bulb is situated. The on\/off switch is in the cord. The 3rd picture is the lamp off with an ambient light still on in the room to highlight the rider. The 4rth picture is all lights off except for the tv lamp, thus quite nicely silhouetting the rider.

I loss the auction a few days ago, and I finished the lamp last night. That is how quick ideas reach my brain and then must be created in 3 dimensions. Now that "BEtsy minus the "B" is my best friend, I have a place to show off the latest stuff immediately.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to converse with me. I am loving meeting the whole creative world out there. Thanks, your pal, Paul W.
